Appetizers are an excellent way to add color, taste, and healthy choices to the meal.  Relish trays of celery, cherry tomatoes, assorted peppers (yellow, red, green), cauliflower, broccoli...the list is endless.  Add a low fat dip as a side and remove the tossed salad from the menu plan and you are ready to go.  Fresh fruits are also a tasty and colorful addition to relish trays.

Common Low-Fat Ingredient Substitutions to use in Dip Recipes

whole milk           skim or 1% milk

cream                     evaporated skim milk   

sour cream           non fat or low fat sour cream

sour cream           non fat or low fat yogurt

sour cream           1% fat cottage cheese, 1 T.  lemon juice

whole egg              2 egg whites, 1/4 cup egg substitute

 cream cheese      non fat or low fat cream cheese

ricotta cheese     non fat or 1% fat cottage cheese

salad dressings   non fat or low fat salad dressings

mayonnaise         non fat or low fat mayonnaise

cheese                    non fat or low fat cheese

Appetizer Tip:   Celery will crisp up fast by placing in a pan of cold water and add a sliced raw potato.
