Family Life & Homemaker's Guide

Organize Bedrooms & Bathrooms

She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness.  Proverbs 31:27Bedroom

Life gets busy so it is easy to end up with a cluttered home and a cluttered mind.  But...1 step at a time...1 day at a time...1 room at a time we can win the war against clutter without feeling overwhelmed in the process.  We don't normally have an abundance of time to tackle big projects.  Therefore, we are breaking this down to little tasks that can be accomplished each day.  If you don't get through this list during the week, do not be discouraged.  Start where you left off the next time you are concentrating on the Bedrooms and Bathrooms.

Monday:  Identify clothing that you can get rid of.

  • Take a few minutes to think about your clothing.  What looks best and fits best, and what fits your lifestyle.
  • You will need 2 bags or containers for this task.
    • One: "give away" for clothing that has not been worn in the last year.  If there are clothing that no longer fit or have not been worn for some time, now is a good time to let them go.  If you still have too much, consider just picking your favorites for each season and donating the rest.
    • Two:  "throw away" for clothing that is stained or damaged in some way.

Tuesday:  Identify shoes, purses and belts that you can get rid of.

  • Take a few minutes to think about your shoes, purses, and belts.  What looks best and fits best, and what fits your lifestyle.
  • You will need 2 bags or containers for this task.
    • One: "give away" for shoes that have not been worn in the last year.  If there are shoes that no longer fit or have not been worn for some time, now is a good time to let them go.   If you still have too much, consider matching to your favorite clothing for each season and donating the rest.  Pick your favorite purses and belts that match your favorite outfits and donate the rest.
    • Two:   "throw away" for shoes, purses, and belts that are damaged in some way.
Wednesday:  Organize medicine cabinet, cosmetics, and other toiletries.
  • Check expiration dates and throw out any expired items.  Keep a list of those items that may need to be replaced.
  • If you have multiple bottles opened of the same item, consolidate.  Place items on shelves by category and alphabetized within the category.
Thursday:  Organize bed linens, bath towels, and cloths.
  • Separate into complete sets.  Consider getting rid of the incomplete sets or sets that are badly worn.
  • Donate:  Launder and give-away those that you have decided to get rid of to homeless shelters, goodwill, or animal shelters.
  • Fold linens, towels, and cloths neatly and store.  Consistency in method of folding is the key to these looking nice after being folded.
Friday:  If you got through the list this week, rest you deserve it:)
  • Spend a little time pampering yourself for a productive week and a job well done.
  • Make a list of ground rules to help keep these rooms organized.
