Joshua: The Face of Self-Confidence

"O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!"  Joshua 7:8

"Self confidence is syndromic of the Christian who has turned from GOD to the mirror."

What a marvelous job the enemies of GOD do in masking their identity and intent.  Paul would describe it thus:
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness;"  (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)
The great victors of the Bible ride upon white horses, and so it is with Satan.  His however, is of Trojan descent.

Self-confidence is syndromic of the Christian who has turned from GOD to the mirror.  The moment we take our eyes off of CHRIST, courage turns casual, even crass.

Ai ... even the city's name sounds benign!

Rather than obey GOD and pursue the conquest of Canaan with a vengeance, Joshua sent just a few up to battle.  Conventional thinking would suggest that Ai, with a population of 12,000 would be easy picking after Jericho.  The scouting party Joshua sent out returned to affirm this reasoning.

One wise old saint has stated that all our failures as Christians are but prayer failures.

Joshua prayed regarding Ai, but only after the few he sent to battle had returned in disgrace and defeat.  It is my observation that no Christian is prayerless, but many are careless ... choosing to seek HIM post event, when their plan blows up.  Joshua succumb to this very thing counting the voice of his spies more vital than that of GOD.  This fiasco at Ai falls into the Biblical: 'Can't be Howie File' ... a sad bit of Satanic dé·jà vu. (Numbers 13-14)

Joshua and his army would live to fight another day and go on to defeat Ai.  Tragically though, many of GOD'S best fighters die in the valley of careless self-confidence never to war again.

May it be said of us that:  "we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."  (Philippians 3:3)
